CHARACTER
Character Name: Jake Peralta
Character Age: 36
Canon: Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Canon Point: Mid season 4, after getting off the night shift

History: Noice

Personality: Jake is an outgoing, optimistic guy whose entire life has been built around his career as a police detective in the NYPD. At the beginning of the series his Sergeant, Terry Jeffords, calls him a brilliant detective who loves puzzles even though the only puzzle he couldn’t solve was how to grow up. For the most part that remains true, he’s a goofball and a jokester to the end but he’s also managed to become a better, slightly more mature man due to the influence of his friends and family who support him.

Jake has a lot of trouble taking things as seriously as he ought to, he treats everything as a game and makes jokes at the worst possible times. Part of this is to keep from being dragged down by the more dour side of his work. As far as defense mechanisms go, cracking jokes to keep the bad stuff from getting to him isn’t the greatest but it also beats substance abuse any day of the week. That isn’t to say that his behavior is all a front, Jake is a giant kid at heart and his behavior reflects that to a T. If there’s a snappy one liner to be said or a weirdly specific alias to be invented he’s already got three prepared. Growing up he was raised by the television and pop culture as his mom struggled to support him after his father walked out. This has led him to build a family from his coworkers who have arguably been there for him more than any of his blood relatives.

Directly related to that: Jake is loyal to his friends to an absolute fault, sometimes even when they don’t want him involved. This leads to a lot of misunderstandings and trouble when he screws up but he genuinely means well. When the people close to him need help he’s always there to support them and do everything he can. Whether it’s paying Terry back all the money he owed him or helping Charles to get his sperm back from his creepy ex-wife Jake is always willing to go the extra mile for the people he cares about.

What he has trouble dealing with is accepting that he can’t always make everyone happy all the time. He doesn’t want to upset the people he cares about so he’ll lie or do something ridiculous to try to defuse the situation, which generally makes things worse. This happens a lot during the course of the show, like when Jake tries to invite Captain Holt along for a weekend where the precinct usually cut loose. Holt ended up being really bad at partying and made everything super awkward which led Jake to trying to coordinate two parties at the same time so everyone could have fun. Of course this just causes everyone more stress and escalates the original problem, and it isn’t until the situation hits critical mass to implode that Jake eases back and acknowledges what’s actually wrong so things can resolve. He means well, but his refusal to accept his own limitations means even seemingly simple issues almost always get worse before they get better.

Jake’s biggest issue with work is that he has trouble letting it go and not letting it consume his life, mostly due to past mistakes that he doesn’t want to repeat. However, that does come at the detriment to his own mental and physical health. When he’s caught up in a case he’s perfectly willing to pull several all nighters or even work while injured if it means making a breakthrough. All he’s ever wanted to be was a detective and he doesn’t have much of a life outside of the job which means he can get pretty obsessive about it when things aren’t going his way. However, he has started to get better at recognizing his limits and knowing when he’s pushing himself a little too far both physically and emotionally. At the start of the show he absolutely would have ignored his own well being to get the job done.

These days he’s been better about taking care of himself, though the job is still a central part of his life. Jake loves being a detective and he takes a lot of pride in the work he does in the precinct. When he’s solving cases and making progress he’s on top of the world, but when he’s struggling or, even worse, taken off the job entirely he gets depressed and listless. He rests so much of his self worth on his occupation because it’s his entire identity. Other people in the precinct have lives and hobbies outside of work. Jake’s hobby is is work. He’s taken case files home, he’s tried to push his way into cases even when he was suspended because he couldn’t stand the thought of being put on the bench. Even when it puts his life at risk Jake has trouble stepping away from the job, like when he was put into witness protection and sent to Florida he kept trying to find leads that might help put away the mob boss who was gunning for him. From his perspective, without his job, without his family at the Nine-Nine, Jake is nothing but a guy. He needs to be a detective and he needs to be working to be happy.

His impulse control is pretty much nonexistent which has led to more than a few screw ups but for the most part Jake tries to come at problems from a well meaning place. He likes to give people shit and tease as much as anyone but he also doesn’t attack people for what makes them different. He’s even willing to put his career and reputation on the line to do what’s right even if it isn’t easy. When his childhood idol started mocking Captain Holt for his sexuality Jake immediately punched the man and had to deal with the consequences of the bad press that came from it. Similarly he ruined his relationship with his lawyer girlfriend when he busted her boss for drug possession. Even if he’s a goofball Jake is a great cop with a strong moral compass that he refuses to compromise even when it would make life a lot simpler for him.

Inventory:

-9mm department issued glock
-1 cool leather jacket
-Other clothes, less cool
-cell phone

Abilities: Nothing magical! Jake is your average, run of the mill dude who is surprisingly healthy for someone whose diet is a total disaster. Everything he can do is honestly within human norms.

Flaws: Jake is definitely not a perfect person, he’s a complete and while he tries to be a good person he can be thoughtless and selfish when it comes to the feelings of people around him. He’s immature, overly competitive, insensitive and has a pile of impulse control issues a mile high. He's a workaholic who doesn't know how to switch off and a slob to boot. Not to mention he has all of his self worth tied up into his job so tightly he goes into a depressive spiral when he's unable work.
